Often our homes and spaces evolve over time with pieces added in / taken out, acquired, needed or found; people don't tend to go out and buy a whole look (do they?).
Natural textures and wood always add warmth and character to a space.
In our living room we have mix of styles, that we think work - an oak (original) Habitat extending dining table, an painted Ikea storage unit, a chapel chair as a side table, and two antique gate-leg folding side tables; one of which is known as 'the black table'... it was from my grandparents house (and a oh the thrill when I little and was then allowed to open 'both sides', not just one).
Somehow in the room the blend of wood tones and colours work together.

With Curious Mr Smith we have the privilege to examine the inner workings of many items that come our way as they are cleaned and restored, the small design features that might go unnoticed on a daily basis but have been executed in the finest of ways and are infinitely pleasing to the eye.

Sometimes we get really lucky with things that come our way; this chair is one of them. Hans J Wegner is considered one of the founding fathers of modern Danish furniture design.
Inspired by the classic English Windsor chair, the original of the chair below, the JH550 / PP550 was originally designed by Wegner in 1947 for Johannes Hansen and called the Peacock Chair for how the back spindles fan out.
This generously proportioned chair is a modern reproduction, though with some small differences to the original it is still undoubtedly exquisitely made.

Staying with Mid-Century elegant design, we have these wooden coat hooks - they are a double hook and are solid and true - these would work well in a hallway, bathroom or bedroom.
We bought this pair of solid oak settles last Autumn, they have been on the list of things to do since then. One is slightly longer at 106cm, than the other at 91cm, they both have the most glorious patina and signs of wear, which have only been enhanced by the oiling and waxing; they would work really well in a hallway, dining area or even for quiet picture contemplation...
Curious about the font used for the RA initials - we contacted the Royal Academy of Arts who couldn't have been more helpful in going through their archives to check if there was a connection; alas their research didn't dig anything up; but it's lovely thought nonetheless...

This Antique Oak Four Drawer Chest of Drawers on Jacobean Style Stand is a completely stunning chest of drawers; we believe the chest of drawers may have had a previous life before it was later added on to the stand which it now sits, the woods of the two have the same dark finish but are not the quite the same.

We love the mix of modern, mid-century and beyond - good design is good design.
