Here at Curious Mr Smith, followers will know we have ever-evolving and growing stock – it certainly keeps things fresh and interesting – particularly as we continue to learn more about original creators, makers and influences of particular times.
Across our offer as well as beautiful, useful pieces that might be considered more ‘antique’, we have a penchant for finding/buying/restoring more modern pieces as well – classic pieces, designed, considered, well made and modern-timeless.
Not so long ago we acquired some Philippe Stark stacking dining chairs in a just off-white colour – the Slick Slick for XO designed in 1999 - other than a really good clean and replacing the feet they were a quick turnaround to get them good to go to get them onto the website.
And then, with a theme starting, these pale yellow chairs came our way a few weeks ago (these had not been loved, but in our care have come up an absolute treat) – the Bo for Driade designed by Philippe Starck again in the 1990s – these chairs are solid, and stack so beautifully creating the most pleasing of shapes. These chairs are perfect for in or out door use.
So who is Philippe Starck?
Philippe Starck is a world-famous French creator - his vision and philosophy is that creation of any form must improve the lives of as many people as possible, and by also adding an element of joy and excitement to everyday items. He has continually pushed the boundaries of design, and therefore has become one of the most visionary and renowned creators around the globe.
Born in Paris in 1949. His father, Andre Starck, was an aeronautical engineer and is said to have been a big influence in Philippe’s interest in design.
What else has he made?
The Louis Ghost is just over 20 years old and has become a Kartell absolute best-seller but, with some 1.5 million pieces sold, it is, furthermore, an icon and the most widely sold design chair in the world.
Another easily recognisable Philippe Starck design classic is the Alessi Salif Juicy citrus squeezer first produced in 1990...
A limited edition re-design for Perrier was launched in October 2023 to celebrate Perrier's 160th birthday - Philippe Starck re-imagined the iconic glass bottle by adding in horizontal striations within the glass...
And finally... for the foreseeable future Curious Mr Smith is intent on sourcing furniture and home accessories for your consideration, but should we branch out further we 'may' consider trying to source another Starck - this yacht - he is a man of many many talents.
